Luke

Introduction

We can believe, with certainty, that Jesus is who He says He is, He did what the Bible records Him as doing, and He said what the Bible records Him as saying. May our faith, founded on fact, increase as we read this powerful account of Jesus, gathered from many people who saw and heard Him.

Background To This Book

Luke was not one of the twelve disciples, rather, he interviewed those who were eyewitnesses to the life of Jesus in order to write this account. You could say, he was a researcher and journalist who wrote a biography of Christ. Luke says of his work, “I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” (Luke 1:3&4)

The Gospel of Luke covers much of what Jesus began to do and to teach (Acts 1:1-2). It has a wonderfully “down to earth” tone, as it focuses on Jesus’s concern for the poor, the sick, the women and the children.

Who was Luke?

  • He was a Gentile and a physician (doctor)

  • He was the only Gentile to write any part of the New Testament

  • He was a devoted companion of Paul the apostle, travelling and ministering with Paul in many places (Luke was an “apostolic worker”)

  • He was a scientist, researcher, interviewer, journalist and writer

Who was Theophilus?

  • The intended initial recipient of this book (and of the book, Acts)

  • Probably a God-lover, probably of high social standing (“most excellent”)

  • Probably a Roman government official

  • Already knew the gospel stories

Luke, the book:

  • Written in classical Greek language

  • Written to a Gentile audience, AD 50-60 (within this period)

  • Written before the book of Acts (Luke’s second book)

  • Luke’s gospel is the most comprehensive of the four gospels

  • It includes more emphasis on prayer, the Holy Spirit, joy and preaching the gospel than any other gospel!

Luke - The Early Years Of Jesus

In this seven week study, you will discuss the first three chapters of the book of Luke and establish an understanding and appreciation of the beginnings of the man, Jesus Christ. Be on the lookout for evidence of the Trinity, of angels, and of the supernatural workings of God. Notice the place of prayer and of joy in the lives of the characters, while also appreciating how ordinary and relatable these people are. Always be attentive and responsive to every revelation of the Lord - Father, Son, Spirit. These are always invitations to worship the One True God.

So, respond. Worship Him!
