who is the way?
Does it surprise you that Jesus Christ said:
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus was saying that he is the sole way to God, the embodiment of truth, and the place where life is found. These are big claims!
Can you remember a time when you needed to ask for directions?
When you were, quite simply, lost?
These days most of us have access to google maps, or something similar, and the dilemma is easily solved. At a deeper level, many of us can also identify times when we have felt lost, lacking direction or purpose.
It’s a very human experience.
Perhaps you’ve had moments when you have asked:
“Am I headed in the right direction?”
“If I carry on this way, where will I end up?”
“What is my purpose?”
“How do I find true and lasting fulfilment?”
“Can I experience spiritual enlightenment?”
“What happens when I die?”
“What is the way to God?”
From the outset, Jesus called people to follow him. And many did. They traveled with him, listened to his teachings, saw his miracles and adopted his way of life. Later on, when he told them that he was the way, the truth and the life, Jesus was inviting them to follow him into a relationship with God. In saying that he was “the way”, Jesus was emphasising the exclusive nature of the only path to God. There is no other way! No other pathway to spiritual life, lasting fulfilment or God.
Jesus is the way to God.
But that’s not the whole story. Let’s revisit those feelings and questions we have. What does the bible say about that? What does the bible say about you? The bible doesn’t mince words when it comes to such important human experiences, or leave you guessing about the way to God. Unapologetically, it answers the questions we ask. You feel lost, you lack purpose and lasting fulfilment, because you are separated from God. Relationship with God is what you are missing! Without this, there will always be a ‘lostness’.
Let's keep reading
“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” (Bible, Romans 3:23)
Sin is more than just doing bad stuff. It is also the natural desire you have to be the one who decides right from wrong. Your sin will cause you to be separated from God, not just in this life, but in the next life too. We know. It sounds pretty grim. But, remember, Jesus said that he is the way! Jesus is the way of salvation, the way to God. He took your sin on himself and he died for it. The bible says that Jesus died in your place, taking the punishment for sin that you deserve.
“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (Bible, Romans 5:8)
Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, proving his victory over sin and death! Now all you need to do is repent and believe. To repent means to turn away from your sin, saying sorry to God, and turning instead to follow Jesus. To believe means to trust that God will forgive you for all of your sins and wash you clean because Jesus has died for you.
Jesus said, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” (Bible, Matthew 4:17)
Jesus died so that you can live! You can have a relationship with God. You will never be spiritually lost again. And when you die, you will follow Jesus into eternal life.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (Bible, John 3:16).
